Deeney Criticizes Early Premier League Return

Watford captain Troy Deeney has slammed the early return of the Premier League in the face of Covid-19 and insists the health of his family is paramount.

Deeney has added his voice to the ongoing debate to object Project Restart's plans to resume the season.

The UK government have given the green light for English football authorities to resume its season amid coronavirus concerns.

Earlier this week all 20 captains joined a Premier League meeting to discuss the potential return of football and player welfare with the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA), league officials and Government representatives.

Deeney together with West Ham United’s Mark Noble was said to be vocal during the meeting, with the Watford man insisting he would rather go broke than see the Premier League return prematurely.

In an interview on Instagram live, the 31-year-old admitted he does not even talk about football at the moment, and insists he would not play football anytime soon if he feels it is not safe to play.

"I am not even talking about football at the moment - I am talking about my family's health, and that is it," Deeney said.

"If I feel that I'm not looking after my family, then I'm not going to do it. I am not going to put my family at risk.

"What are they going to do, take money off me? I've been broke before so it doesn't bother me."
